The worst part about the whole "same dress" is the idea that the defense of "This is just how people in Space China dresses" doesn't hold up. We can see through the npcs and male characters that other styles of clothing do exist, and of course, they exist! Space China is explicitly made up of three different races from three different planets with completely different histories and cultures... The idea that there would only ever be one style of dress for women just goes completely against the established lore and world building! It's just laziness. They were lazy because they knew the whales would shill out the money for a pretty woman in a revealing dress... And they were proven right.

To add more context to Otto’s story. It’s not just that Kallen was his childhood friend and first love, Otto was frail and sickly as a child, but had a brilliant mind. Kallen was the *only* person to pay attention to him, the only one to acknowledge his talents. So yeah, he developed a crush on her, but she left him when she learned he was complicit in child experimentation (something he did multiple times within his 500 years of life). Kallen ran off with a crucial element for said experiments, and then met Yae Sakura - a shrine maiden. The two fell in love, but it wasn’t meant to last, with the Black Box - that focus of experimentation - corrupting Sakura and forcing Kallen to mercy kill her lover. After that, Kallen was captured and sent back to Europe for trial. During the proceedings, she declared “The Herrscher girl was innocent, and I was in love with her!”. The judges thought she lost her mind and sentenced her to hanging. IIRC Otto said that she could marry him on paper to escape the charges, but Kallen was already disillusioned and didn’t want to renounce her love for Kallen. So she went to die voluntarily, even though she could’ve broken out at any time. And that lead to Otto’s 500 years of fuckarounding and then to him finding out, but achieving his goal as well.

Anti-Entropy Visual Novel spoilers follow (highly recommend reading it). - - - It has a second layer, as Welt Yang’s father - Mr Nokiavertanen AND his hero - Welt Joyce died on the same day. His dad was stabbed before his eyes, and Joyce overburdened his body with Herrscher powers to stop New York from being nuked. So both his father and his idol were taken away from him at the same time.

Shen has the same reaction to Jacq i do to Lanling Wang anyways I hate my sibling specifically BECAUSE i've been abused by them and I can safely say Kieran's harmless. The same people who hate him are the same "alpha male anti-snowflake" chuds who got after people like Jocat. I think villainizing Carmine though is almost as bad a read as villainizing Kieran. She's honestly even more autism coded than Kieran and in all the best ways. She's doing the best she can but that doesn't mean she's doing much of anything right. Both are multifaceted but you put it perfectly when you said how the difference is Carmine's characterization comes at the expense of Kieran's own characterization. The issue isn't self contained, it's metatextual, by which i mean the issue is just that it's a badly written story, and so while Carmine is consistent as a character, Kieran isnt in a way that hurts both his own character and since Carmine's character is dependent on his, still hurts Carmine’s and makes her seems a lot more tone deaf. This is not just made worse by but explicitly EMPHASIZED by how you have no agency in the DLC story from being forced to go along with an obvious lie to not having the option to just let Kieran have the one of a kind mythical he’s idolized and you as the player might not even care much about. It all completely undermines its attempts to then “subvert” the idea that you as the player have protag privilege. Milky also put it perfectly when he said during the Teal Mask stream that a lot of the issues would be fixed if they just put Nemona+Arven+Penny in instead of 3 randos, so it could continue the dynamic of our friends injecting nuanced interactions into the plot and doing more than just saying Yes/No to everything.Teal Mask in general is just filler/backstory to setup Indigo Disc and that has the issue of making it so it feels really contrived cause it’s all meant to be set in stone with no input. Again it’s a sort of schrodinger’s hell of badly written cause and effect where there’s good characters badly used and neither of the DLCs even has enough content to make the conceptually interesting characters properly fleshed out. But the TLDR is what i said at the start of villainizing Carmine isn’t really much if any better than trying to villainize Kieran, cause both are LikeThatTM because of bad writing not because of any sort of human behavior.
